About this policy
Everything is Something ("we", "us", "our") is a sole trader operating in Victoria, Australia. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store and disclose information when you use Knock Knock, our browser groovebox, available at knock.everything-something.com (the Service).
Knock Knock is built to keep your work on your device. There are no user accounts. The beats you make, the audio you import and the recordings you take stay in your browser unless you choose to share a beat. This policy explains the small amount that does leave your device, and how to switch it off.
We are committed to complying with applicable privacy laws, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). Where you are located in another jurisdiction, additional or different privacy rights may apply to you.
What information we collect
Usage statistics (on by default, can be switched off)
- A randomly generated anonymous identifier, created in your browser and stored there. It is not derived from your identity, device or location, and we cannot link it to you
- A small number of usage events associated with that identifier: that the app was opened, that a pad was hit, that playback started, that a sample was imported, that a beat was exported or shared, an occasional "still here" heartbeat, and any error the app hit. Each event carries only coarse detail such as tempo, platform (phone or desktop), the site that linked you here, and any campaign tag in the link you followed
- Standard technical data processed by our hosting infrastructure, such as IP address, browser type and approximate region, used for delivery and abuse prevention. We do not store IP addresses with usage events
These statistics are sent in batches to our own server; no third-party analytics service is involved. You can turn them off at any time with the "anonymous usage stats" checkbox in the app's keys window. Raw events are deleted after 90 days; only daily totals are kept beyond that.
If you share a beat
- The beat itself: its patterns, settings and, where the beat uses imported or recorded audio, that audio, so that the person you send the link to can hear it
- The beat's name and tempo, which appear on the shared page and in the "fresh shares" list in the app
- Your anonymous identifier, held with the share so we can limit how many links one browser can create. It is never shown publicly
Shared beats are public: anyone with the link can play them, and recent shares are listed for other users. Shares that include audio are deleted automatically after 7 days. Shares that use only the built-in sounds are tiny and are kept unless you ask us to remove them.
Microphone
If you record from the microphone, the recording is processed and stored only in your browser. Nothing is transmitted unless you later share a beat that includes it. The browser will ask your permission before the microphone is used.
That is the complete list. There are no accounts, no payments, no advertising profiles and no social features that collect information about you. We do not collect sensitive information (as defined under the Privacy Act) and ask that you do not submit any, including in audio you record or share.
How we use your information
- Operate the Service and deliver shared beats to the people you send them to
- Understand, in aggregate, what people use and what breaks, so we can improve the app
- Detect and prevent abuse or misuse of the Service, including limiting how many shares one browser can create
- Comply with our legal obligations
We do not send email from Knock Knock and we will not use your information for purposes materially different from those described above without your consent.
Local storage and cookies
Knock Knock stores your projects, imported audio, recordings and window layout in your browser's storage. This storage is strictly functional and stays on your device. Clearing your browser's site data will erase it, so use the app's export feature if you want a copy of a beat elsewhere.
We do not use cookies, advertising trackers or cross-site tracking, which is why you will not see a cookie banner.
Third-party services
To operate the Service, we use the following providers that may process your data:

We take reasonable care in selecting third-party providers. We do not sell your personal information to any third party.
International data transfers
Our database and storage provider holds Service data in Japan (AWS Tokyo region), and our hosting provider may process data in the United States or the European Union. Where we disclose information overseas, we take reasonable steps consistent with APP 8 to ensure the recipient handles it in accordance with standards comparable to Australian privacy law.
Data retention and deletion
Raw usage events are deleted after 90 days. Shared beats that include audio are deleted after 7 days. Other shared beats are retained so their links keep working.
To have a shared beat removed, or to ask what we hold against your anonymous identifier, contact us at the address below. Because the identifier lives only in your browser, you will need to send it to us; it is stored under the name knock.anon in the app's site data.
Your rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address below. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law.
If you are dissatisfied with how we handle your personal information, you may complain to us first, and if unresolved, to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) or the privacy regulator in your jurisdiction.
Children
The Service is intended for users aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 16. If you believe a minor has shared a beat containing personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The revision date above reflects the current version. Material changes will be noted on this page, and your continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
